These are fantastic. It’s amazing how much China has changed in such a short time.

Thanks for posting these! I used the second to last one to illustrate an article about microfinance during Cultural Revolution on the Wokai Adventures blog. My colleague Hongqing suggested a different translation for this slogan, “Reach for Your Potential in the Great Country!”

I really enjoy reading your blog. Thank you for all the great photos and anecdotes.

Hello, Ben
there is a funny thing about Chairman Mao that i heard about recently.
when Chairman Mao classified 5 harmful animals, sparrow was one of them. So Chairman Mao’s command is to kill all sparrows. The unique way to do it was they brought out all kinds of drums and gongs, and made as much noise as they can everywhere in China. Sparrows cannot stand noise for some reason, and then they need to fly to other places, but there are noises all over China, so they have no where to fly to………and it ended up to they were all too tired and died………
Ask a person who is over 60 years old in China, and he/she will tell you. The first time I heard about this, I was thinking maybe he was joking Chairman Mao, but I heard that again……..so i guess it is true…
Though Maozedong did something bad or even very stup1d, his achievement for Chinese cannot be denied……….when Chinese are talking about his bad things, there is nothing can be compared to his great contribution to China…………
Anyway, your blog wrote something i didnot know before…

This ‘抓’ means ‘focus on’. So ‘抓革命’ should be ‘Focus on the Revolution’.
