Your own experiences in China demonstrate a very interesting point – one that is probably alien to a lot of readers of Chua’s book. I think for some people the book extols cultural values so far removed from what most are used to that it’s difficult to empathise.

Nice photos. One good thing about europe tour is the good transportation network. Here in Australia, i think we are trying to provide flexibility in transportation and touring.

Great blog posting. I\’ve enjoyed your entire posting on working in a barbershop and am now devouring (not literally) your section on Food and Drink in China.

In India, the hours are pretty much the same, but the barbers are one-man shows, handling the cutting, washing, massaging; there isn\’t a hierarchy in the male barber shops, although there is one in the ladies salons here. The rates are also comparable. I like the idea of a wash before and after the haircut. It would be nice to see something like that here in India.

Paris is my favorite foreign city. I visited four times in 1951-52 in the Army, then Grandma and I have been back several times since 1991, but you showed us Parisian scenes we didn’t know existed. Incidentally, London is Grandma’s favorite overseas city.

We are sad to see that the trees in front of the Anne Frank House have disappeared. The Indonesian influence is so big because Netherlands ran the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia, for several centuries.
