Barack Obama Targeting Chinese Voters?
During a routine walk through Chinatown today, I noticed that (like most neighborhoods in Chicago these days) the streetscape was blanketed with Barack Obama signage. Chinese Americans are not usually viewed as a critical voting bloc, but apparently the Obama camp thought they were significant enough to put out this poster.

It reads:
Please cast a vote for Obama
Strong Reforms
Lower taxes, more benefits
Whole-heartedly save the economy
Regardless whether or not Barry O. can garner the Chinese vote, his hold on the state of Illinois is a formidable force not to be reckoned with. My own guess is that the sign is not targeted at Chinese American voters, but rather at “regular” Americans, as if to say “Look, Obama is multi-cultural. He even attracts the Chinese.” As for me, the sign had no effect. I sent in my ballot last week.
伟大的导师,伟大的统帅 伟大的领袖, 伟大的舵手
奥巴马万岁,万岁, 万万岁!

Nice find!
I read an article yesterday saying that if China were to vote in our election, 80% favor Obama. So your guess was right…doesn’t seem like he needs their vote, but he has a shot at making himself look “multi-cultural”.

I don’t know if I would say 奥巴马万岁. But that’s just my own psychological associations at play.

That’s very fitting for Obamao.
On the other hand, not all Chinese Americans see it that way. Check out this web site – http://ChicagoThug.com.

Just to clarify so nobody gets the wrong idea, I’m not an Obamamaniac. Yes, I voted for the guy, but I haven’t volunteered any of my time, canvased neighborhoods, or made any of those annoying “Have you heard about Barack Obama?” phone calls. I don’t even have an Obama sign in my window. Frankly, I believe this country exhausts far too much time, money, and effort choosing our leaders rather than fixing the problems which the leaders are presumably put into power to mend. I was just hoping to use a little Cu1tural Revo1ution innuendo to hint at this point…ok I’ll get off my soapbox now.

I got a random chinese question about Obama last week up in Jing Ning County. That and the economic crisis, what a weird question that was: “What do you think about the American (couldn’t understand what the hell he was saying but it ended with weijing or weijin)”? I thought it could be the economy thing but I’ve yet to learn any Chinese economic vocab.
The other thought I have is alot of that ad is 繁体字 which I understand (which guess is like my hanzi knowledge 8 months ago). I still have alot of trouble singing at KTV.

I’ve been voting for almost thirty years and I’ve never heard a presidential candidate make as many promises as Obama. I can see why people laugh at him and call him the “Chosen One.” I swear there are people out there who believe that he could heal the sick with his touch. Everything is going to change, I heard him say today in Des Moines. Yeah, riiiiiiight. I’m a registered Democrat, but I’ll be voting for McCain next Tuesday. Give me someone with his feet on the ground and a clear grasp on what can and cannot be done and not a wannabe Jesus.

@Jeffrey from New York,
I think some of Obama followers actually do believe he is the Messiah. Check out this video – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZjcFp60DJc.
This Peggy Joseph lady actually believes that under the Obama presidency she will no longer have to worry about her gas bills or mortgage payments. Wow! No comments there.
Obama is likely to win this election. Republicans have been very incompetent in the last 8 years. If Obama wins, the GOP deserves it. The sad thing is that American people will have to suffer from it. Barack Obama is an empty suit with a steadfast belief in black liberation theology and Marxism. Spreading the wealth around is his mantra. Cutting taxes for 95% of wage earners? Yeah right! Just like Chairman Mao was the best leader of China.

That’s my fear. I really hope I’m wrong about that, but the more I investigated his past the more worried I’ve become.

When I came to the US I was told by my fellow Chinese that the Democrats are for the poor people and the Republicans are for the rich people. That is probably why close to 80-90% Chinese-American are Democrats.
